Tin town

by marion jarvis

My father's birth certificate states that he was born in 59 Hut, Rosyth, Dunfermline. Would this be what is called Tin Town? Does anyone know any history of this?

Hamish FREEMAN says

Hi Marion, there are a few good books about Rosyth that mention tintown, by Martin Rogers mostly, it was temporary housing for the men building the dockyard from around 1909. The need for housing for the workforce then lead to the building of RosythGarden City  in 1915. There are lots of photos on the CD Rom produced by the Rosyth Garden City Association which is on sale at the Post Office at the Palace in Rosyth.

Martin Rogers says

Hi Marion

The first phase of Tin Town was built in 1913.  From Valuation Rolls produced a couple of years later, it appears that the huts erected as part of the first phase did not have street names.  It is quite likely therefore that each hut had a number and there were certainly more than 100 of them.  There are a couple of avenues I can explore but I would need to know your father's name and date of birth.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
